Celebrating Award Season’s Big Winners (And Their OOH)

March 12, 2024

Did you watch the Academy Awards on Sunday night? Every year the ceremony serves as a coda to awards season, that time of year when we celebrate the very best of movies, music, and television. And some of the most acclaimed have something in common besides the trophies they’re taking home: they advertise out of home with OUTFRONT. So we wanted to offer our congratulations and celebrate our clients’ victories!

Oppenheimer DOOH
The night’s big winner was the unstoppable Oppenheimer. Sharing its release date with the most anticipated movie of the summer might’ve been a challenge for some films. But Christopher Nolan’s striking and evocative visuals made for powerful creative, presented in numerous static and digital out of home formats across billboard and transit media. With the help of those ads, the three-hour biopic become one of the most talked-about movies of the year and one half of the genuine cultural touchstone that was “Barbenheimer.”

Poor Things also had a good night at the Dolby Theatre, winning four awards including Best Actress for Emma Stone. Her victory was considered an upset by some – and one has to wonder if For Your Consideration billboards like the one above influenced Academy voters. Ads like these – known as FYCs – are ubiquitous in Los Angeles and New York in the months leading up to awards season.

Then there was Succession, the smash HBO series which closed its four-season run in its usual form, winning its third Best Drama Series Emmy along with five others. And much like in previous seasons, the show used its key art, like this Los Angeles wallscape, to once again telegraph and hint at the season’s big storyline twist. Fans spent countless hours online debating the meaning of every single element of the imagery, with some correctly zeroing in on the airplane on which Logan Roy died, barely visible high above Kendall’s head. (Spoiler?)

Digital Urban Panel for The Bear
The show we couldn’t stop watching was The Bear, which all but swept this year’s Emmys on the comedy side with 10 wins off 13 nominations. We’re still thinking about that “Fishes” episode… although we’re not sure we’d call that one a comedy.

Finally, special mention must be given to Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear. In addition to taking home the Outstanding Lead Actor Emmy for his performance as Carmy, he all but broke the Internet with his stint on our iconic Calvin Klein NoHo wallscape. It’s Jeremy’s world, we just live in it.

Congratulations to our friends at Universal Pictures, Searchlight Pictures, HBO, and FX/Hulu, and to all the actors, writers, and unsung heroes who brought these stories to life! Thanks for letting us be a part of your success.

We can’t guarantee that an FYC ad will put you in line for an Oscar next year. But we can say with confidence that you don’t have to be a Hollywood A-lister to make an impact with out of home advertising. Let us show you how it’s done. Get in touch today!
